A shooting near Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., on Wednesday afternoon left one person dead and 22 injured, including nine children. Most of the injured were struck by gunshots.
The eruption of violence came as thousands of people had gathered for a public celebration of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl win, and transformed a day of joy and civic pride into one of loss and fear.
Here is what we know about the shooting so far:
Two men have been charged with murder.
Two Missouri residents were charged with murder in the shooting,Jean Peters Baker, the Jackson County prosecutor, said in a news conference Tuesday.
The men, Dominic Miller and Lyndell Mays, began arguing as the rally dispersed, the authorities said, a dispute that quickly escalated when both men pulled out guns and began firing at each other. A bystander, Elizabeth Galvan, was killed in the gunfire.
Both of the men facing murder charges were wounded by gunfire and remained hospitalized on Tuesday. Prosecutors said more arrests were possible.
Two teenagers were also charged.
Two teenagers were charged with resisting arrest and “gun-related” offenses on Friday, officials said, in connection with the shooting. The connection between the two men who were charged with murder and the teenagers who were charged with lesser offenses last week is unclear.
