Man Fatally Shot on Manhattan Subway Train

A man was shot and killed on Sunday morning on a subway train in Lower Manhattan, the police said.

The victim, whose name the police have not released, was shot in the chest around 11:40 a.m. while riding a northbound Q train that was pulling into the Canal Street station, according to the New York Police Department. Officials did not provide information about the events leading up to the shooting.

The Fire Department said that two people were taken to Bellevue Hospital, but did not provide information about their conditions.

The assailant fled to the street level and had not been apprehended, the police said about an hour after the shooting.

The shooting occurred a little less than six weeks after a gunman shot 10 people onboard an R train in Brooklyn, leaving dozens more injured in the aftermath of what officials have said was a terror attack.

The violence has colored perceptions that the subway is unsafe as the city recovers from the coronavirus pandemic.

Social media users described seeing the shots fired and people running off the train after the late-morning shooting.

The shooting prompted transit officials to reroute N and Q trains while the police investigated the shooting. Officials advised riders to expect delays on the E, N, Q and R lines in both directions as the trains shared local tracks.
